Telecom market - Educational program in Taiwan
SPIRIT DSP announced that Taiwan's National Center for High-Performance Computing (NCHC) has chosen SPIRIT's TeamSpirit 3.0 Voice&Video Engine PC to support Taiwan's Advanced Research and Education Network. SPIRIT won this government project in a public bid among all competitive solutions.
NCHC, supported and funded by the government of Taiwan, is Taiwan's leading source for HPC (high performance computing) hardware, software and networking resources. NCHC created a new remote educational program, to help fulfill the "Challenge 2008" plan recently implemented by the government of Taiwan, established to foster the creativity and talent that Taiwan needs to achieve success in the new world economy. The TeamSpirit engine will be used in conjunction with the NCHC's newly developed videoconferencing system, giving remote users a high-quality voice and video over IP (V2oIP) experience.
"SPIRIT again has demonstrated its ability to deliver the highest quality voice and video over IP experience. Its award-winning technology has been proven by the largest telecommunications companies in the world. After careful review and testing, we're now confident in SPIRIT's ability to deliver the best communication experience," said Shyi-Ching Lin, Education Platform Project Leader at NCHC.
"Taiwan is a very advanced market for V2oIP technology, and we're pleased that our voice and video engine is supporting Taiwan's Advanced Research and Education Network, lead by the National Center for High-Performance Computing," said Alex Kravchenko, VP Sales of SPIRIT. "Within the distance learning and remote education markets, there's a burning need for quality, converged communications. Our engines solve the technical issues typically encountered in V2oIP, offering the smoothest voice and video experience possible."
TeamSpirit 3.0 Voice&Video Engine PC is a pre-integrated IMS-ready embedded software product that encapsulates wideband voice and video processing to offer the smoothest video and voice integration experience for NGN (Next Generation Network) services and applications.
The engine seamlessly bundles standard and proprietary wideband voice and video codecs, acoustic echo and noise cancellation, packet loss concealment, adaptive jitter buffer and network optimizing functionality, voice/video synchronization, all standard telephony protocols, CPU load control and more, allowing fast and easy integration into complex products designed to deliver low-latency V2oIP. The engine supports next generation IMS features: 3gp voice/video sharing, voice/video recording, 3gp playback/record, RTSP/SDP protocols, push-to-talk, etc., and is optimized for Microsoft Windows 98/2K/XP/Vista, Apple Mac OS X, and Linux, among other operating systems.
Today, SPIRIT has the only voice and video engine that spans all communication devices and all market segments, including mobile OEMs/ODMs, semiconductor vendors, VoIP service providers, software vendors and developers of multi-player games and social networks (set-top boxes, PCs, mobile softphones, WiFi and 3G phones, cordless IP phones, IMS platforms and Web conferencing systems). The Company's award-winning engine powers more than 100 million voice channels across 80 countries.
The National Center for High-Performance Computing (NCHC) is one of the centers of Taiwan's National Applied Research Laboratories. It is the only supercomputing facility in Taiwan. To provide more professional services, the NCHC has unified computing and networking resources in its Hsinchu, Taichung, and Tainan business unit offices. The NCHC also passed ISO 9001-2000 and ISO 27001:2005 certifications in 2005 and 2006 respectively.
SPIRIT DSP employs 140 professionals, and has been in the international software licensing business since 1992. A bootstrap company, SPIRIT has been profitable for 15 years. For the last 10 years, SPIRIT has been focused on voice and video communication software. SPIRIT communication software is used in over 80 countries and powers more than 100 million embedded voice channels today. SeeStorm is SPIRIT affiliate for synthetic video conferencing. •

Destinations, events and venues throughout Europe can now partner with NAVTEQ to create and market accurate customised maps and dynamic event guides of their locations in web-based and print formats. Map Network maps and content solutions are also enabled for integration into mobile devices.
Map Network maps and distribution network help locations tell their unique stories and share them with visitors before, during and after their experience. Offering rich local content and Points of Interest, these maps enable places to showcase their brand in a highly-customised, location-relevant way. Map Network products are built on a flexible content management system, which allows online updating to provide visitors with up-to-date local content and fresh, accurate maps.
“Bringing our Map Network products and capabilities to Europe was a logical next step for us. Map Network maps offer a compelling marketing medium for locations and events, visually telegraphing and organising the attributes which together create the visitor experience and are the essence of their brands,” commented Shane Green, Vice President Location Content Group, NAVTEQ. “Gathering this ultra-local, time-sensitive content is also a critical step in helping NAVTEQ organise the world’s location content for use by our customers and end-users.”

The roulette table is spinning and you’ve placed your bet: orange. But instead of standing in a casino, you’re playing on your mobile phone while waiting for a train. This scenario will soon be common thanks to a strategic partnership between NMS Communications and Dutch mobile services provider Comsys. The Picco Bello mobile version of the game will become the first interactive mobile video game provided by Europe’s largest TV and radio broadcaster RTL Group.
Interactive mobile video is a nascent technology that allows operators to increase revenues by offering mobile phone users the chance to play interactive video games on their mobile phones. The NMS/Comsys solution allows RTL to capitalize on the growing demand for interactive mobile applications by enabling callers in Luxembourg to play Picco Bello when and where they want. ‘Contestants’ will only need to dial a number and choose the video call connection to play. If they choose the correct color the ball lands on three times in a row, they will be automatically entered to be an audience member at the wildly popular TV game show.
“Picco Bello fans are zealous, so it was important that we give them the same look and feel of the show on their mobile phones”, said RTL Station Manager Tom Weber. “This solution makes participants feel like they’re in the TV studio, which will help drive usage and revenues with this next-generation service.”
The flexibility and ease of use of NMS’s Open Access media boards and Video Access development tool kits, along with NMS’s technical expertise, enabled Comsys to complete the interactive video application in six months about half the time it would have taken with competing development projects, according to Comsys Telecom & Media BV CEO Gerrit Jan Konijnenberg. “Time to market is critical for companies trying to differentiate themselves in competitive markets”, said Konijnenberg. “Video IVR is a new frontier, and RTL is further establishing its leadership by being one of the first to introduce this technology in Europe. Picco Bello’s success will blaze a trail for other applications to come.”
Comsys will host the service, which does not require any software download and can be used on any 3G phone without configuration, enabling companies like RTL to take advantage of the latest IVR technology while ensuring they will have the capacity to meet increased demand.
“Interactive gaming on demand will be a boon to mobile operators and content providers as subscribers demand more personalization, more options and more interaction,” said NMS Communications Platforms President Steve Gladstone. “Together, NMS and Comsys will provide the interactive mobile video technology that operators will depend on to take advantage of new revenue opportunities.”
