Instant messaging and visual voicemail for Android

Communology, a Cologne, Germany-based software house specializing in mobile applications, is launching two new messaging solutions for Android onto the market at the Mobile World Congress 2010 in Barcelona (Hall 2, Stand 2B68). Mobile operators that need to deliver functionally advanced, high-quality applications to the rapidly growing community using Google’s smart phone operating system can now achieve this much faster with LiveMedia Visual Voicemail for Android and LiveMedia Mobile IM for Android.

Visual voicemail offers a convenient user interface that revolutionizes how they interact with voicemail. With LiveMedia Visual Voicemail for Android, Communology is making its user-friendly client software available for Android devices. Communology ensures interoperability with a variety of voicemail servers used by mobile operators. The company already offers visual voicemail clients for Symbian, Windows Mobile and Java ME devices, along with implementation services and, if customers require, patent licenses, all from a single source.

For icq, msn, Yahoo and other instant messaging (IM) communities, Communology offers convenient, pre-configured Java ME and Symbian clients. With LiveMedia Mobile IM for Android, Communology is adding another popular platform to its portfolio. With auto login functionality and the ability to work with multiple IM communities through a single interface, LiveMedia Mobile IM offers users maximum convenience. Mobile communication features like click-to-call and click-to-text extend the base messaging functionality.

Proven white label model

Communology’s quality-tested, pre-configured LiveMedia clients are available as white label products that can easily be customized and branded to mobile operators’ requirements and ported to specific models of mobile device. This reduces time-to-market significantly. The carrier-grade apps meet the stringent requirements of network operators and support voicemail servers and IM gateways from leading vendors. The white label model of developing mobile communication applications has proven itself repeatedly. Customers who have purchased LiveMedia clients include several major mobile communication industry players such as Sony Ericsson, Nokia, T-Mobile and Vodafone, media companies like Astra, and businesses using mobile advertising, including Daimler. • 15-2-10

Communology operates worldwide as a specialist in providing carrier-grade mobile client applications for personal communication on multiple platforms. The company’s portfolio also includes test environments and services for the quality assurance of standard software components in mobile devices. Communology customers include AT&T, T-Mobile, Vodafone, Nokia, and Sony Ericsson.

NEC and PacketVideo at MWC 2010

Mobile media apps for NEC Femtocell

NEC Corporation (NEC) and PacketVideo (PV) announced today that the organizations will partner to demonstrate new rich mobile applications for NEC’s femtocell solutions, including its Home Gateway service, at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2010.

NEC has incorporated PV’s MediaFusion content management and delivery platform and TwonkyMedia connected home application into its femtocell solutions, enabling mobile operators to offer consumers indoor, high-speed access to their favourite media services.

“Femtocell offers new revenue streams for mobile operators which strengthens the business case for mobile operators to offer the high-performance indoor coverage that femtocell brings,” said Anil Kohli, General Manager, Indoor Solutions Division, NEC.

“With PacketVideo we are demonstrating  how femtocell’s enhanced levels of connectivity can give users greater access and control over their media experience.”

TwonkyMedia is a family of applications that link networked home and mobile devices and popular home entertainment services, such as the TV and PC, to enable seamless media sharing through standards such as the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA), an interoperable platform for electronic devices.

MediaFusion is a navigation portal for mobile devices that enables easy access to multiple applications and services, such as music downloads, ringtones, games and videos using a single, holistic application.

“Our collaboration with NEC will provide NEC customers with high-speed access to the media services they love on myriad devices, using femtocell technology as the centerpiece for delivering an innovative new way to experience and enjoy media.

In addition, PV solutions increase the value of mobile operators’ services and help differentiate their brand,” said Osama Alshaykh, Ph.D., CTO of Packet Video.  “We look forward to partnering with NEC to demonstrate the value of our newest joint offering at Mobile World Congress.” • 9-2-10

Communology takes smart Java apps to the mass market

At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Communology, a Cologne, Germany-based software house specializing in mobile applications, aims to dispel the myth that sophisticated applications can only run on smart phones. The company will be showing LiveMedia C3 Cubical and LiveMedia Visual Voicemail, new software clients that also support feature phones and Java ME, the dominant platform in the medium-priced mobile segment. With its smart Java apps, Communology is targeting the needs of mobile operators that want to present richer offerings to the mass market.

LiveMedia C3 Cubical for Java unites a range of different web services and mobile communication applications on its Connected Home Screen. Cubical offers users easy access to telephony, e-mail, SMS, MMS, visual voicemail, instant messaging (IM) communities, and social networks. With its Connected Phone Book, the application also provides a central contact management tool that supports every available communication channel: Besides data from the device’s own phone book, it can incorporate instant messaging and social network contacts and even show contacts’ presence status. With LiveMedia Visual Voicemail for Java, Communology makes its exceptionally easy-to-use client software available to users of the widespread Java platform and mid priced feature phones.

Communology also ensures interoperability with the various voicemail servers used by operators and can provide implementation services and, if required, patent licenses, all from a single source.

Smart Java apps

“Today, mobile apps are the domain of smart phones. Although mid-price feature phones are much more common, hardly any attractive applications are available for them. The question is why this vast potential market has remained largely untapped. One reason is that developing advanced applications which need to control multiple functions on user devices is significantly more complex on Java ME and proprietary platforms than it is on smart phones with their open interfaces.

Now, though, our Java specialists, with their many years of experience, have succeeded in creating sophisticated applications for the mass market. The keen interest this has generated among mobile operators shows that our smart Java apps stand up to comparison with apps for Android, the iPhone, and similar platforms,” said Thomas Kähler, CEO of Communology.
