Altobridge, the leading supplier of remote communications solutions, has made two important high-level appointments to its Remote Community Solution (RCS) business, which will bolster what is already one of the industry’s strongest teams delivering cost-effective and green-power-enabled mobile connectivity to remote communities around the world.
Olof Lindberg, recently with UDcast SA, France, joins Altobridge as VP, Global Sales, where he will be responsible for driving worldwide sales and partnerships for the growing remote communications market.
He was previously VP Global Sales at Cambridge Broadband Networks, UK, where he was responsible for sales of cellular backhaul/transmission solutions to mobile operators. He also added considerable first-hand knowledge of African and Middle Eastern markets during this time to his already extensive experience in these regions gained in his previous roles with IPWireless, UK, as sales director EMEA. Before that, Olof contributed to Cisco’s expansion, first as territory manager Sweden, and later as country manager Saudi Arabia.
As Altobridge’s activities across Africa and the Middle East, Asia and Latin America increase, Olof’s personal experience of being involved in closing contracts in Africa (Cameroon, Ghana, Uganda, South Africa, Morocco, Tanzania), Latin America (Argentina, Peru, Brazil, Columbia) and Asia (Malaysia and Mongolia) will be a major asset in his latest sales role.
In the second appointment, Peter Tuomey, Altobridge’s General Manager Asia for the past three years, has been appointed Director, Product Management. In this role, he will work closely with the global sales, marketing and R&D teams as they build on the growing, worldwide success of the RCS.
Relocating back to the UK from Malaysia to take up his new post, Peter has been instrumental in ensuring the success of Maxis as Altobridge’s important reference customer in the area of remote communications. He leaves behind a solid base of live Remote Community Solution sites across Malaysia and a firm order book, which will almost double the number of sites currently using Altobridge technology, and strong prospects for incremental sales with Maxis.
Aoife Sexton, President Remote Community Solutions at Altobridge, said, “We are pleased to announce these two key appointments, which we believe will set the stage for even more customer wins around the world for our Remote Community Solution, as well as continued product innovation, particularly in the area of low power green solutions. The track records of both Olof and Peter are clear indicators of the huge opportunities which lie ahead for Altobridge and we are delighted to welcome them to their new posts.” • 11-10-10

Altobridge Limited – leaders in technology that cuts the cost of delivering voice and mobile broadband services across wireless networks – has today announced that it has been selected by the World Economic Forum as a 2012 Technology Pioneer.
To be selected as a Technology Pioneer, a company must be involved in the development of a major technology and/or innovation and have the potential for long-term impact on business and society.
In addition, it must demonstrate visionary leadership, show all the signs of being a long-standing and sustainable market leader – and its technology must be proven. Previous Technology Pioneers include Google (2001) and Twitter (2010). Since its creation in 2002, Altobridge has focused on the enormous challenges involved in getting basic connectivity and mobile broadband to the world’s unconnected.
While the world’s service providers, governments and Universal Service Obligation funds have made strides in these endeavours, the operational costs associated with running these remote communications systems remains high.
Investment could, therefore, have a negative impact on overall network running costs. Service Providers must get a return on investment from these remote systems in order to continue to offer competitive prices to consumers and Altobridge has proven that this is achievable.
The Altobridge lite-site™ is the most transmission-efficient solution within the industry, requiring 0kbps in idle mode and only 4kbps of bandwidth per active call. Local Connectivity™ switches local calls at the remote base station, thereby completely eliminating backhaul requirement for local calls.
At 90-Watt average power consumption, the solar-powered solution is the most power-efficient solution for remote community connectivity and the Altobridge breakthrough, Data-at-the-Edge™, cuts mobile broadband costs while improving user experience.
To date, Altobridge lite-site™ deployments have brought first-time mobile connectivity to remote communities across Northern and South East Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
Commenting on the award, Mike Fitzgerald, Altobridge Chief Executive, said, “In the developed world, where mobile voice and mobile broadband access is near ubiquitous, we often forget that nearly a quarter of the world’s population do not have access to any form of telephony services. Through our R&D initiatives, we have removed the historical cost and technical barriers that have, to date, limited mobile network operators’ ability to deploy commercially-viable solutions for connecting unconnected communities. We welcome this recognition and look forward to building further partnerships and alliances within this very important forum.”
As a Technology Pioneer, Mike Fitzgerald will represent Altobridge at the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2011 in Dalian, People's Republic of China. • 1-9-11

Location based services (LBS) have been talked about for quite a while and many industry giants are foraying in this field in the past few years. Google Latitude has the maximum recall as it has been a highly publicized service by Google that caters to the top end of the pyramid that are advanced users of VAS.
High-end location technology (GPS) available on smart phones with data plans reaches out to niche subscribers who are actively using mobile Internet. It enables them to find out their location, points of interest, their friend’s location and sharing such updates between their community of friends.
In a recent service launch example Airtel – India’s leading operator – has taken innovation to the next level by offering a similar service but focusing on a mass offering across the complete pyramid. Airtel has enabled the same functionality on all handsets, without the need of data service, by simply dialing a USSD string (*321*88#).
Their Buddy Finder Service is enabled for all of their 120 million subscribers. By simply dialing the universal code, a mother can get to know the location of her teenagers who are partying late at night, or a wife can start the dinner preparation because she has checked and saw that her spouse has just left the office, or an employer knows the location of all his team members who are out on a sales call.
The ability of knowing the location of any mobile handset to an approximate 300 meter of accuracy opens a plethora of applications and the services are being consumed by a large number of subscribers.
This is a business model that can be replicated in all emerging markets around the world especially in Middle East and Africa where a majority of subscribers use low-end handsets and still want to enjoy high end VAS services like LBS.
Given the exciting scenario around location, NDTV – India’s leading news channel – held a panel discussion around “Innovation in VAS – LBA the Next Frontier” on its popular show Cell Guru hosted by Rajiv Makhni, a famous technology journalist.
The panel brought together three leading companies in the LBS space - Google, Airtel and Telenity. The panel discussion revolved around how location based applications are opening a new frontier in VAS and the host of interesting services that will be offered to subscribers in India in 2010.
Do watch the interesting debate on LBS and its future in India. • Source: Telenity (13-6-10)
Telefónica Internacional + NEC
NEC Corporation (NEC) announced at the Mobile World Congress (Booth 8A125, Hall 8) that Telefónica has selected NEC as a strategic partner to promote Cloud Computing in Latin America.
The deal will enhance NEC’s position as a partner of Telefónica in the major service areas of applications. These include software as a service (SaaS), Desktop/Virtual PC as a service (access to PC over a network) and other on-demand services and applications (“everything as a service” or XaaS).
The project will allow Telefónica to boost its innovative services in Latin America using a more efficient model and with reduced time-to-market. Initially, Telefónica aims to support the business of small and medium enterprises in Latin America, by breaking down the current entry barriers to new technologies and to the world of IT applications, while encouraging an open environment for developers to launch new applications.
NEC will deploy the platform and applications to launch Cloud Services in Latin America, including logistics, location, collaboration, virtual PC, CRM, ERP, health, games and media applications. Cloud Computing will play a significant role in Telefónica’s portfolio, with the ability to deliver added value to both residential and enterprise markets.
The new agreement follows the recent contract signed by NEC and Telefónica of Spain to launch applications and software as a service (marketed as “Aplicateca”). It is part of the activities of NEC’s new European Competence Center for Cloud Computing and value added services, which was established in Madrid in early 2009.
According to Jaime Serrano, president and CEO of NEC Iberica, "This deal will mark another step in our collaboration with the Telefónica Group and reflects the position of our "Cloud Services" offering which combines NEC's expertise in the areas of IT and networks, in the market." • 18-2-10
