The telecommunications industry is one of the fastest growing and most important sectors of the economy of Ukraine.
The total revenue generated from communication services in 2006 amounted to nearly 24.1 billion UAH (4.77 billion USD), an increase of 21.9% compared to the previous year.
Consumption of communication services per inhabitant has grown to 21.7%.
The volume of mobile communication services has increased by 40%. Television programmes, radio programmes and radio communication transfers have increased by 30%.
Mobile communication accounts for 59.2% of communication services, 19.3% are longdistance and international communications, 9.4% city telecommunication and 4.7% postal services.
Between January and August 2006, telephone communication grew by 4.6% compared to the same period in 2005. Telephone communication to CIS countries grew by 4.6% and international calls grew by 37.9%, to 32%.
Operators in the industry have invested nearly 5.4 billion UAH (1.07 billion US dollars) in the development of the communications industry. 67% of the financing for telecommunications and the development of the postal service is provided by domestic capital, with the remaining 33% from foreign investors.
Over 9 months, 414.5 thousand numbers were created and entered into the automatic telephone exchange, a 10% increase compared to the same period in 2005.
On 1 October 2006, the mobile communication network had 40.4 million subscribers, 30% more than at the beginning of the year.
Approximately 8.5 million inhabitants currently use the Internet and the Government considers its development a high priority.
High-speed Internet services (xDSL) and broadband access via cable television are now becoming more common and zones for wireless access to the Internet using WiFi and WiMAX technology are expanding.
