Multimedia services in mobile networks

Starent Networks introduces next generation SGSN

Starent Networks, Corp. (provider of infrastructure solutions that enable mobile operators to deliver multimedia services) announced the availability of its Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN), the latest addition to its product family that Starent Networks expects will further extend its leadership in the multimedia core networking market.  Starent Networks will discuss this news next week at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Hall 2, Booth 2E51.

The Starent Networks SGSN has been selected by one of the largest global UMTS mobile operators for deployment in a major Western European country.

The Starent Networks SGSN leverages the intelligence, performance and distributed architecture of the Starent Networks ST40 multimedia core platform to deliver market leading capabilities.  Starent Networks now offers mobile operators the opportunity to select an SGSN from other than traditional radio network vendors.

As many mobile operators maintain 2.5G radio networks along with their 3G radio networks, they are looking to solutions that can address both network technologies.  Starent Networks’ SGSN is particularly well suited for such a network because it can support both 2.5G and 3G technologies in the same platform.  More importantly, the Starent Networks solution can handle a subscriber roaming between the 2.5G and 3G network within a single process, which will enable node and network performance to be optimized.

Furthermore, utilizing the ST40 platform’s built in routing engines, the Starent Networks SGSN enhances the handling of 3G traffic by providing both traditional 3G architecture and direct tunnel in a single solution.

"Today’s mobile communications operators continually face the challenges of better managing and improving network performance,” said Ashraf Dahod, CEO of Starent Networks. “Our SGSN solution joins our GGSN to provide a more complete UMTS packet core solution with the added flexibility of integrating both SGSN and GGSN solutions in a single platform and addressing both 2.5G and 3G radio network technologies.  One of our key goals is providing a carrier-class solution with increased levels of flexibility and ease of deployment.”

Starent Networks’ SGSN is deployed on the ST40 platform, providing high capacity, high through-put and robust availability in a smaller footprint than currently available in the market.  The Starent Networks solution supports the radio and core network interfaces required of mobile operators, enhancing the SGSN’s performance while offering outstanding scalability and reducing interconnectivity complexity.  Along with multiple port Ethernet interfaces, Starent Networks’ SGSN offers ATM and Frame Relay interfaces to provide connectivity with legacy network equipment.  The ST40 platform is also used for GGSN functionality providing a single platform for both SGSN and GGSN solutions and the opportunity for mobile operators to simplify network operations and maximize network investment.

In addition to providing high performance and network intelligence to the mobile operator’s current radio network technologies, Starent Networks’ SGSN is designed to migrate to Long Term Evolution (LTE) and System Architecture Evolution (SAE) networks.

Starent Networks, Corp. is a leading provider of infrastructure solutions that enable mobile operators to deliver multimedia services to their subscribers.  Starent Networks has created solutions that provide mobile operators with the functions and services needed for access, mobility management and call control in their networks.

New Mobile Operator (MVNO) Turkuaz-Mobile launched in Europe

Germany has a new German MVNO operator called Turkuaz-Mobile. As can be expected from its name, Turkuaz-Mobile is entirely created for the young Turkish-Germans, who live, think and communicate in two languages. In the near future this new MVNO will also be launched in other European countries. Turkuaz-Mobile is all about community communications. Amongst the Turkuaz-Mobile users, calls and texts cost only 9 cent per minute or SMS.

Research carried out by Turkuaz-Mobile earlier this year proved that the young German-Turkish, no matter living in Berlin or Düsseldorf, would like to get a specific blend of German and Turkish music downloads. Precisely that mix is now available for the first time in the German market. Since also their entertainment environment is multi-cultural Turkuaz-Mobile is offering the best of both worlds. Turkuaz-Mobile users will enjoy all their services, like free ring-tones, mobile TV streams, goal alerts and breaking news, from content sources based in Germany and Turkey.

As a special introduction gift the Turkuaz-Mobile SIM Pre-Pay pack contains a CD with TURBO music (Turkish, Urban-Hip Hop music). All tracks can also be downloaded on the TURKUAZ Mobile Portal.

Turkuaz-Mobile differentiates itself from other Mobile Operators in several ways:

First of all the offering of Turkuaz-Mobile is entirely based on Turkish-German Value Added Services. It offers a world of Music, sports, news and entertainment all via the mobile phone. Second the management is Turkish/German. Turkuaz-Mobile has only one focus whereby other operators are doing their Turkish activities just in the slipstream as a by-product.

And last Turkuaz-Mobile has a full integration of mobile and traditional internet and TV, which can be experienced just by visiting the Turkuaz-Mobile website.

The slogan of Turkuaz-Mobile: ‘Yeni Nesil Cep Dünyasi’ (’The new mobile generation’) is just what we are”, explains General Manager Salih Atik, working from Berlin. Marketing Manager Oezlem Baspinar, based in the Düsseldorf office adds, “Intensive reflections with the core group of 14-24 year olds helped the Turkuaz-Mobile team to shape the product.”

To be able to deliver the (streaming) content at high speed to the Turkuaz-Mobile users all SIM cards, pre or post paid, are 3G enabled.

The original idea to create Turkuaz-Mobile came from the Turkuaz-Mobile mother company Comsys based in the Netherlands. Gerrit Jan Konijnenberg CEO of Comsys and founder of Turkuaz-Mobile GmbH explained: “Over the last decade Comsys has been very successful in servicing MVNO’s with platform services. Also as Vice President of the Mobile Entertainment Forum EMEA I have seen the success of MVNO’s combining community tariffs with mobile content for a specific target groups.”

Turkuaz-Mobile has a wide range of strategic relationships in Germany and Turkey who together create the solid basis for this new operator. These are vistream GmbH, who runs the MVNO network, MediaNova and AkbasMusik for content and Comsys Deutschland GmbH for interactive telephone platform services.

Turkuaz-Mobile network partner vistream is exited about the Launch. Product Manager Jan an de Meulen at vistream explains: ”The ethnic focus is a global trend that we now combine with innovative community and content services. We are happy to take the lead in Germany together with Turkuaz Mobile.”

In the near future Turkuaz-Mobile will also offer a growing variety of services such as a Flat-Fee tariff plan. Since the research showed that respondents now prefer Pre-paid cards Turkuaz-Mobile is happy to launch with Pre-pay for now, to be followed with post paid later this year.

Turkuaz-Mobile is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Comsys Group. Founded in Düsseldorf in 2007 Turkuaz-Mobile provides mobile ‘communitainment’ (telecommunication and mobile entertainment) services for the young TurkishGermans in- and outside Germany.

Comsys (originally established in The Netherlands) is a specialist in interactive telephony services and provides telecommunication products and hosted services in the converging arena of IN, 3G, SIP and VoIP networks for mobile and fixed line telephone operators, MVNO’s and Call centres. Comsys is besides that the only Service Provider with more than 25 years of experience in developing and hosting interactive media services. In 2008 Comsys celebrates its 25 year existence. Comsys has access to hosted services centres in 7 locations throughout Europe.

A wholly owned subsidiary of the telecommunications specialist MATERNA Information & Communications, vistream offers customers from various industry sectors innovative GSM and UMTS solutions, as well as value-added services. As the first company on the German mobile telephone market, vistream sees itself as a genuine Mobile Virtual Network Enabler (MVNE), thus taking on the role of a mobile network operator for its customers. Using its own GSM core network, as well as its own services, vistream offers individual customer models.
