Highlights from the whole event

Turn your notebook into a mobile television

Watch television on the train, in the park, in the taxi – a little stick for your notebook enables it to receive TV in almost any location. Thank goodness for DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting)!  Pinnacle Systems will be presenting the new generation of portable TV tuners at CeBIT 2008 in Hannover – and they are tiny and multifunctional. The PCTV Nano Stick is only the size of a lipstick so it fits nicely in your handbag or coat pocket and connects to your PC via USB. The software supplied with the DVBT stick delivers the television pictures to your laptop.

Highlight: the software supports digital video recording too. Another novelty is that you can now watch television on all devices in your home using just the one stick.

Cable protector bridges with style

Cable protector bridges, though important, tend to be quite unsightly. However, at CeBIT 2008, H. Hiendl GmbH & Co. KG will be unveiling a cable protector bridge that is not only practical, but comes in a stylish design: the “Serpa B9”.

This new cable protector bridge provides maximum safety at the workstation with minimum effort. The weight of the “Serpa B9” ensures that it remains securely positioned on the floor, removing the need for laborious screw-fixing. This innovation, nominated for the 2008 Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany, is available in attractive colors like signal red and soft grey. These cable protector bridges eliminate trip hazards and come in lengths of up to 3m, although this can be extended with the corresponding coupling elements.

laser mouse –Speedy Gonzales meets his match

Controlling modern computer games often requires extremely quick reactions. At CeBIT 2008 in Hannover, the company Dicota will be exhibiting their new laser USB gaming mouse ‘Attack’, designed for optimum reaction speeds with an extremely high resolution of up to 2,200 dpi.

This gaming mouse has a high sampling rate, ensuring not only speed, but also accuracy: the invisible laser is about 20 times more accurate than a standard optical LED sensor. Furthermore, a mousepad is no longer needed because the laser works on almost any surface. The Speed Button allows you to switch between three resolution modes (800, 1,600 and 2,200 dpi) during play. All in all, this mouse provides for fantastic game handling. For the gamer, this usually means later than usual: the game is up…

Backpack power station to generate electricity

Mobile battery run down? Laptop died? With a Sunload solar backpack you need never have this kind of problem again. At CeBIT 2008, Berlin-based Sunload GmbH will be presenting an electric accessory: a portable mini power station that converts solar energy into electrical energy.

A flexible panel of solar cells on the upper side of the bag captures the sun’s rays. The solar energy is then stored in batteries in the bag, which means the user has a power reserve in case of emergency. And the best thing is these bags are super stylish, made from recycled truck canvas and come in three different ranges: Messenger, Business and, for the very professional, Briefcase.

Enchantment at the fair: images moved as if by magic

Science fiction heroes do it on the big screen: with a click of their fingers, they make virtual pictures swirl through the air. The Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems will make these virtual cinematic tricks a reality at CeBIT 2008.

One simple hand gesture and a whole host of images appear on the monitor as if by magic, without using either a mouse or a keyboard.  “PointScreen” is a recently developed technology based on the “Electric Field Sensing (EFS) principle” that works by measuring and digitizing the dynamics of the body. The position and speed of gestures is then translated in real time into navigation and interaction. Magical moments...

A monitor that needs no power while it sleeps

Green IT has become a trend. More and more companies are developing products with low power consumption and environment-friendly production. At CeBIT 2008 in Hannover, Fujitsu Siemens will be exhibiting their zero-watt display, a computer monitor that uses no power when in standby mode. This monitor is equipped with a special switching element in the power adapter which is controlled by the PC. In “Power Save” mode, the monitor is completely disconnected from the mains and is only reconnected via a computer command.

A wonderful power-saving apparatus for end users and a bank for big companies, the zero-watt display is due to be released onto the market this summer.

Your virtual housekeeper is listening

While you lounge about on the sofa, your virtual housekeeper can do all the work upon simple verbal instruction, whether it be rolling up the blinds, switching off the lights or turning on the heating. At CeBIT 2008 in Hannover, European Media Laboratory GmbH (EML) will be demonstrating voice control of household appliances.

CeBIT visitors will have the opportunity to try out this innovation with a demonstration model from the Heidelberg-based research group. They will, for example, be able to activate a stereo system by voice command. These applications are not just gadgets; they are a real help for people with limited mobility who want a good quality of life.

Fine dust filter for laser printers

laser printers provide the best print results fast. With every sheet they print, however, they release hazardous fine dust into the air. But, thanks to the “Clean Office” laser printer filter, which Riensch & Held GmbH & Co. KG will be presenting at CeBIT 2008, this problem can be eliminated.

This new filter has an open honeycomb structure which produces practically no air flow resistance. Fine dust, on the other hand, is attracted to the electrostatically charged honeycomb structure and thus prevented from being released into the air. “Clean Office” is suitable for use in all popular printer models and can be customized if necessary.

New protection against pesky e-mail spam

An e-mail security solution that offers unique protection against e-mail spam is eleven GmbH’s highlight for CeBIT 2008. In addition to a spam recognition rate of over 98 percent, the main feature of this new spam filter, which the exhibitor claims is unique worldwide, is its “Zero False Positives” functionality: this procedure identifies spam based on its most definitive character of being a mass mailing and thereby ensures individual messages are not wrongly filtered out.

Among other features, this security concept also comes with an enSurance e-mail firewall and an anti-virus package that includes virus outbreak detection and therefore protects against spam, viruses and phishing.
