CeBIT 2008 - Hannover, 4-9 March

Federal Minister Ursula von der Leyen as patroness of Women@CeBIT

Women to enjoy free admission to CeBIT on International Women’s Day

German Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Ursula von der Leyen, has been named patroness of “Women@CeBIT” day at CeBIT, the world’s largest ICT trade fair. “CeBIT is a marvelous opportunity to really get people excited about all aspects of information technology,” said von der Leyen. “I would like to invite women from all over Germany to come to CeBIT in Hannover on 8 March to celebrate International Women’s Day and reap the benefits of this fabulous event,” she added. “We can only address the lack of young talent and skilled professionals in the German economy if everyone involved also makes a point of encouraging women to consider technology-based careers.”

Green IT, eLearning, telematics, the design: driving innovation special display and the meeting point for SMEs are just some of the fascinating technology themes that women interested in IT will find at CeBIT 2008,” said Ernst Raue, Member of the Managing Board at Deutsche Messe.

On the Saturday of CeBIT (8 March), Deutsche Messe is granting free admission to all female visitors. Women can register at www.cebit.de/women. At the entrances, they can pick up their free tickets to the most important fair in the digital industry’s calendar.

According to the German Federal Statistics Office, 30,325 young men and women chose to study computing science in 2007. Only 17.2 percent were female. Over the past few years, the interest in computing science has steadily declined – and the number of women opting for this discipline has declined even further. In the year 2000, women still accounted for almost 20 percent of the total. “With the “Women@CeBIT” campaign, CeBIT has set itself the goal of getting more women interested in IT, a key industry of the future,” added Raue.

As well as a wide range of panel discussions, the congress “Our Future in ICT”, organized by Initiative D21, will include special events for women on the Saturday afternoon. At 2.15 p.m., for example, there will be a discussion entitled “Networks! Career Opportunities for Women in ICT” in which women will share their experiences of working in the industry at management level.

On the same day, the IBM stand in Hall 2 will focus on women in management positions in the ICT industry. Participants will discuss ways of significantly increasing the number of women at managerial level and developing far-reaching strategies to encourage young women to pursue careers in the industry.

Particularly over the CeBIT weekend, many HR managers will be on hand at exhibitors’ stands, on the lookout for potential employees interested in on-the-spot interviews. Dell, Deutsche Bahn AG, Hewlett-Packard, Oracle, SAP and Siemens are just some of the companies that use CeBIT to recruit talented young people. The “Job & Career Market” in Hall 6 can open doors to jobs in fields such as IT, automotive engineering, banking and insurance for skilled professionals and career starters alike.

CeBIT 2008 - Hannover, 4-9 March

Web 2.0 and Social Networks move into the business community

First European Congress on upcoming trends and perspectives for the new IT generation • Enterprise 2.0 Summit in Hall 8

Part of the CeBIT Global Conference program accompanying the world’s largest ICT show starts on 4 March 2008 with the first European Congress on Web 2.0 and Social Network applications for the corporate sector. At the Enterprise 2.0 Summit in Hall 8 various practical examples will be presented which illustrate the potential gains and challenges of the new IT generation. The conference will be held in English in order to ensure that an international audience of experts can participate in the lecture program.

Whether in customer service, quality management or the establishment of company-wide information management, Web 2.0 technologies and social software such as wikis, blogs and podcasts can improve general communication and the use of knowledge, thus helping companies become more flexible and innovative. The use of Web 2.0 solutions substantially improves internal data flow, intra-departmental collaboration and the coordination of different operational functions.

User-friendly interfaces and interactive applications are crucial here as they facilitate the networking of personnel and workstations and are invaluable in the documentation process. Enhancing the flow of information effectively improves performance and hence competitiveness.

One concrete example is the customer centre of Société Française de Radiotéléphone (SFR Service Client), where use of wiki software made it possible to achieve vast improvements in terms of both the quality and volume of the information handled. Similarly spectacular results were experienced by Fraport AG, another best-practice example to be presented at the Enterprise 2.0 Summit.

Wieland Stützel (head of Information Management, Fraport AG) will explain how using wiki made it possible for Fraport employees to access and document information about the company and topics relevant to air-freight business. There will also be a report from Motorola A/S which will demonstrate how Enterprise 2.0 projects revolutionized information management within the company by introducing its use in small departmental projects.

The introduction of new methods of information management are seen as complementary rather than a substitution for customary information and process management procedures. Other best-practice examples such as BASF AG, the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) and the Vodafone Group complete the program of the first Enterprise 2.0 Summit at CeBIT.

A fee will be charged for participation. Kongress Media GmbH is responsible for the organization of the event. Further details can be obtained online. •

First International Conference of the NGMN Alliance at CeBIT

“The Future of Mobile Broadband Communications”

Top representatives from leading mobile communications enterprises convene to discuss latest generation of mobile broadband communications • Networking hub for decision-makers, analysts and media representatives — on 6 March at Hannover Convention Center

The Next Generation Mobile Network Alliance (NGMN) is considered the world’s top initiative of mobile communications network operations, equipment providers and research institutes. Counting 44 member organizations, the NGMN Conference has selected CeBIT 2008 (4 to 9 March) as its next venue. The focus of this high-class event will be on “The Future of Mobile Broadband Communications” — a key topic for the mobile communications sector and all other sectors involved.

The keynote address at the conference will be delivered by Hamid Akhavan, CEO of T-Mobile International and Chairman of the Board of the NGMN Alliance, who will detail the objectives of the mobile communications initiative, offering a glimpse of the future challenges facing the industry. This will be followed by a talk by Vodafone D2 CTO Hartmut Kremling on the demands placed on network operators by mobile broadband communications. Matthias Reiss, Head of LTE Radio at Nokia Siemens Networks, will then provide the audience with some fascinating insights into how the network infrastructure will fulfill the requirements of network operators.

Expectations are also high for the presentation by Jin-Sung Choi, Vice President for Mobile Communications Technology at LG Electronics, who will reveal some key future features of broadband end devices as well as prospective new services. And Texas Instruments CTO Bill Krenik will also make an appearance, explaining how one of the world’s leading chip manufacturers is readying itself for the mobile broadband future, in which download rates of up to 100 Mbit/s are anticipated within the next few years.

A panel discussion will wrap up the conference, which takes place on “CeBIT Thursday” (6 March) from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the exhibition’s own Convention Center (CC). The conference will be moderated by Michael Lange, Head of Corporate Communications at T-Mobile International. Observers already consider this event one of the standout items in the CeBIT conference program. Around 200 participants are expected.

CeBIT 2008 – Hannover, 4-9 March

New technologies for doctors at TeleHealth 2008

Large exhibition area, Networking Night and extensive supporting program of lectures, corporate presentations, workshops and symposia • Congress participants will receive six training credits for each day of attendance

What future role will information technology play in the medical care of patients in hospitals and general practices? How can information technology help to reduce costs in the healthcare sector? Visitors to this year’s CeBIT can find answers to these and other questions at TeleHealth 2008, which for the first time this year is being staged as an integral part of CeBIT, the world’s biggest trade fair for the digital industry.

On 7 and 8 March visitors to Hall 8 can get an overview of the broad range of telemedicine processes that are now used by healthcare professionals. And for the first hospital IT systems and other eHealth solutions for capturing, processing and distributing medical data will be on display at TeleHealth. The TeleHealth display area is located right next to the special presentation Public Sector Parc, which has been looking at eHealth issues for a number of years now – so visitors will be able to find all the relevant solutions conveniently grouped together in one place.

As well as a large exhibition area and the popular Networking Night on the Friday of the show (7 March), visitors to TeleHealth will also have access to an extensive program of lectures on theoretical and practical aspects, panel discussions, symposia, workshops and corporate presentations based around specific themes. There will be two chaired congress forums, open to anyone holding a standard CeBIT admission ticket.

TeleHealth will be formally opened on 7 March by Dr. Klaus Theo Schröder, secretary of state at the German Federal Ministry of Health. In an opening debate he will sit down with Prof. Dr. Claus E. Heinrich, a member of the executive board of IT/telecoms industry association BITKOM, and Dr. Clemens Martin Auer, from the Austrian Ministry of Health, Family and Youth Affairs, to discuss a range of health policy issues affecting Germany and the rest of Europe.

The program over the next two days includes talks by leading experts, who will be reporting on the latest research findings and presenting case studies drawn from current medical practice. Prominent themes range from the integration of hardware solutions in existing hospital-based and practice-based information systems to the improvement of medical care and the timely documentation of medical data with the aid of electronic patient files. The latter is designed to facilitate a reliable, controlled, time- and place-dependent flow of information for health-relevant data. The use of mobile assistants to access electronic patient files will be keenly debated, as will various questions relating to the acceptance of patient care delivered by telemedicine or the financing and affordability of telemedicine services.

The symposium “Ambient Assisted Living” will feature telemedicine modules for everything from disease prevention to the treatment of the chronically ill in the home environment. This year’s official CeBIT Partner Country France is also bringing its own symposium to TeleHealth. As well as the latest advances and options in home medical monitoring through telemedicine, France will also be presenting eHealth solutions for the remote treatment of patients.

The participation of the national telemedicine associations from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, along with the European Health Telematics Association (EHTEL), both in the exhibition area and in the various forums, ensures that visitors get a proper European perspective. Full details of the congress program can be found at TeleHealth web pages. The congress is recognized and certified by the Regional Medical Council of Lower Saxony, and qualifying participants will earn 6 training credits (CME points) for each day’s attendance.
