CeBIT 2008 - Hannover, 4-9 March
What will bank branches look like by the year 2012? What is the most convenient way for customers to withdraw cash? What innovative services can strengthen customer loyalty to financial institutions? These and many other questions will be answered by big-name companies and specialists at CeBIT 2008 (4 to 9 March) in the “Banking & Finance” display sector in Hall 17, with exhibitors like Citizen Systems, Hess Cash System, KEBA, NCR and Thales.
As part of the conceptual restructuring of CeBIT the show has been given a stronger vertical focus for an optimum fit with the various “communities.” The “Banking & Finance” sector has been expanded to include “Point of Sale” (POS) products and services, making this the first-ever holistic presentation of hardware and software systems in Hall 17. Featured products include retail software, loan management and liquidity planning tools, account statement printers, money counting machines and automated tellers, cashless cash registers, registration systems and POS terminals. A particular highlight involves Banqtec’s new “Cashmobile” a mobile automated teller that provides a completely new dimension in flexibility and customer service.
Staged jointly with the monthly financial publication “Bankmagazin”, the Finance Solutions Forum offers tradeshow visitors a diverse, user-oriented program. The forum will be opened on 4 March by Dr. Ibrahim Karasu, Management Board Member of the Association of German Banks. Discussion panels featuring leading representatives of banking and financial service institutions as well as big-name financial experts and prominent figures from the business, political and research communities will discuss topics of burning interest to the industry, including “State-of-the-Art IT Solutions”, “Secure Access Control”, “Outsourcing Processes”, “Automated Teller Solutions”, “International Sales Strategies & Software in Everyday Practice” and “Automated Self-service Solutions”.
The forum will also feature findings from the latest “Bank of the Future” surveys, including the opportunities and challenges which lie in store for banks and how to prepare for these. Apart from Klaus Rausch, Managing Director of HVB Systems, speakers will include Rolf Seifert, Information Technology Director at Credit Suisse, Dr. Raschid Karabek, Head of Strategy & Business Development at BT Germany and Martin Engstler from the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAO). The program will be rounded off by a series of workshops and panel discussions for example, a discussion featuring representatives from the RZB Group, UBS and Western Union Bank discussing the topic, “Is the bank customer still king?”
An additional highlight involves the new “Future Banking” platform, an annual showcase for cutting-edge products and solutions revolving around a new topic every year. The featured topic at CeBIT 2008 will be “Bank Branch 2012”. On over 200 square meters of display space, this platform will provide a glimpse of state-of-the-art bank branches a couple of years down the road, including the functionalities and technology they will need to offer. To this end, a fully functional bank branch office with cutting edge hardware and software solutions will be assembled. The goal is to highlight innovative solutions for banking processes. Exhibitors include IND, Kobil and WINCOR NIXDORF, all keen on demonstrating how banks can develop their business with the customer’s best interest in mind as well as improve their own cost-effectiveness.
On CeBIT weekend the topics of recruiting, continuing education and careers will be highlighted. Human Resources representatives from leading financial service and banking institutions as well as the higher education sector will be on hand to meet potential applicants.

CeBIT 2008 - Hannover, 4-9 March
“Green IT Village” in Hall 9 • Green IT Guide to take home • Green IT featured in all CeBIT displays, meetings and themed presentations
CeBIT aims to raise awareness about energy-efficient use of computers by placing Green IT at the top of the agenda of the forthcoming event from 4 to 9 March, 2008. “The world’s largest trade show for the digital industry provides the right international platform for an issue that affects the whole ICT sector. We want to show energy-efficient ways of using information and communications technology and how the application of ICT solutions can save power”, explains Dr. Sven-Michael Prüser, Vice-President at Deutsche Messe, Hannover, with responsibility for CeBIT. “Investing in Green IT is an obvious step for anyone who is interested in reducing energy costs and at the same time wants to contribute to climate protection.”
To ensure that this key issue receives the appropriate international profile, the organizers of CeBIT entered into a strategic cooperation by enlisting the support of the climate protection initiative Climate Savers Computing (CSCI) from the USA. CSCI brings manufacturers, companies, organizations and individual people together with the aim of significantly improving the energy-efficiency of computers and servers. At CeBIT 2008 “green solutions” can be found in various places. The first encounter is at the Green IT Village presentation in Hall 9. This will be flanked by the Green IT Guide, which Deutsche Messe is publishing for the first time.
Apart from numerous meetings and seminars devoted to Green IT, many leading manufacturers have included Green IT solutions in their program. One such example is a fully functioning energy-efficient computer centre, which can be seen in operation at the event.
For visitors and exhibitors seeking information on Green IT the Green IT Village in Hall 9 is the perfect meeting-point. The special display does much more than provide general information it also shows the “green solutions” of various suppliers and demonstrates how they can be used together. One particularly impressive example of this is the green networked office, which enables a direct comparison of energy-efficient applications in the office work environment with customary applications. The model office demonstrates the enormous energy resources currently consumed in the average office and shows how the same office operations can be performed with energy-efficient ICT solutions. As Dr. Prüser says: “The aim is to show every single visitor that they can make a personal contribution to climate protection and cost reduction.”
Visitors to the Green IT Village will also be able to pick up the first official Green IT Guide, which has been produced by Deutsche Messe in cooperation with the publication Computerwoche, published by IDG. The new magazine examines such topics as the importance of Green IT, virtualization as the key to improved energy efficiency and the role of IT in environmental protection. There will also be reports on the latest study findings, ideas for the “ideal computer centre”, suggestions on how to make optimum use of printers, as well as information on recycling and hazardous materials used in hardware. In addition, the Green IT Guide will provide an overview of those CeBIT exhibitors offering green IT solutions. The Guide to be published shortly before the trade show will also appear online and can then be downloaded free of charge.
The program of seminars and meetings at CeBIT will also deal with the issue of Green IT. Various events and panel discussions are scheduled to take place in Hall 8, while themed talks will be held at the event “future talk” in Hall 9 and at the forum in Linux Park (Hall 5).
In fact, Green IT will play a role in one form or another in nearly every exhibition hall as well as in numerous themed displays at the upcoming CeBIT. Thus, the section “Home & Mobile Solutions” will be showcasing energy-saving PC’s with much longer battery times, while at “Telematics & Navigation” visitors can see intelligent navigation solutions that calculate routes designed to minimize fuel consumption. Other examples can be seen at “Technology & Infrastructure”, including mains adaptors affording 88 percent energy efficiency and UPS (uninterruptible power supply) solutions that reduce energy consumption by 75 percent. The new Virtualization Forum at “Business Solutions” in Hall 2 will feature a display of technology for energy-efficient computer centres. This will show how the application of virtualization solutions can lead to the creation of smaller “virtual” units from one individual server or how smaller units can be integrated to form one large system.

CeBIT 2008 Hannover, 4-9 March
Seven weeks before the start of CeBIT, the organizers of the world’s leading trade fair for the digital industry had already received registrations from more than 5,500 exhibitors
As the world’s biggest event geared to the high-tech sector, this year’s CeBIT will feature the display categories of “Business Solutions”, “Public Sector Solutions”, “Home & Mobile Solutions” and “Technology & Infrastructure”. The CeBIT organizer Deutsche Messe will also be staging a first-time series of conferences entitled “CeBIT Global Conferences.” This year’s CeBIT Partner Country is France.
Raue continued: “At CeBIT 2008 we will have more outstanding representatives from politics, business and research than ever.” The exhibition will be kicked off on the evening of 3 March by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, in a ceremony which also features French President Nicolas Sarkozy, EU Commission President José Manuel Barroso and Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, the world’s biggest software manufacturer.
“We are also anticipating numerous additional top industry representatives within the framework of our CeBIT Global Conferences,” Raue continued. “We already have firm commitments from Microsoft COO Kevin Turner, Software AG CEO Karl-Heinz Streibich, Sony Ericsson CEO Carl Henric Svanberg, Natalya Kasperskaya of Kaspersky Labs, SAP CEO Henning Kagermann, Deutsche Telekom CEO René Obermann, and many more.” This will allow CeBIT to consolidate its status as the world’s leading platform for know-how transfer. “No other event in the world offers a supporting program like CeBIT,” concluded Raue.
Out of a large field of topics, several key themes are already emerging in advance of the show: “At CeBIT we will be seeing numerous new technology trends for office and home-based applications. The convergence of technologies will be tangible in all halls at CeBIT. At ‘Future Parc’ several international research labs will display the technology of the future,” explained Raue. “The problem of an inadequate supply of qualified specialists for the IT industry is becoming more acute; as an international flagship exhibition, CeBIT plays an important role in helping companies find the right people. For this reason, we have teamed up with the business initiative known as ‘IT Fitness’ to create a special weekend event designed to popularize IT careers among young people.”
A pervasive issue in the industry involves “green IT”, asserted Raue. “The question of how innovative IT applications can contribute to climate protection is one that preoccupies almost all enterprises. But for the IT industry, the energy efficiency of their equipment is also becoming a key concern. The global IT industry is facing some critical choices.”
In response, CeBIT will be offering several concentrated green IT exhibits for the first time ever: “In Hall 9 we will have our ‘Green IT Village’. And we are organizing a special ‘green IT’ supporting program. Finally, we are producing a ‘Green IT Guide’, a comprehensive reference guide which will come out in time for CeBIT,” explained Raue.
To do justice to the topic at CeBIT, Deutsche Messe has entered into a strategic cooperation with the Climate Savers Computing Initiative. This global initiative brings together manufacturers, businesses, organizations and consumers to sharply increase the energy efficiency of computers and servers. The initiative is led by international enterprises like Dell, EDS, Google, HP, Intel, Lenovo, Microsoft, Pacific Gas & Electric and the World Wildlife Fund. The sponsors include AMD, Delta Electronics, eBay, Fujitsu, Hitachi, Marvell Semiconductor, NEC, Sun and Supermicro.
Another focus at CeBIT will involve the interests of small and medium-sized enterprises. “This target audience is of particular importance to us,” stated Raue, “for it is exactly this group which can greatly increase its chances of making the right investment by visiting CeBIT to get a comprehensive overview of the available IT applications. This is becoming vitally important in the face of increasingly globalized competition.”
CeBIT is responding to the growing significance of the retail sector by staging its “Planet Reseller” special display. Specially designed for resellers and closed to the general public, this event continues to register growth. “Exhibitors here can reach more resellers than at any other event. This is where new trends are revealed and the latest products showcased,” said Raue.
The growing penetration of health care by information technology and telecommunications is underscored by the rapid growth of the “Telehealth” sector. “The health care sector has a particularly large cost-savings potential, which can be tapped through the intelligent deployment of IT solutions,” explained Raue.
“The example of the health care sector proves that information technology has developed into a pivotal cross-sectional industry. IT is omnipresent be it in industrial machinery and equipment, in every car, in every office, in the living room and even children’s rooms,” concluded Raue.

CeBIT 2008 Hannover, 4-9 March
Green IT is a major keynote of CeBIT 2008 • Market for resource-saving solutions expected to grow annually by 66 percent until 2010 • Stand-by function responsible for ten percent of power consumption in German households
Higher energy costs, expensive emission rights, rising charges for water and every kind of waste disposal against this background, the fact that the IT branch is going “green” in 2008 really has nothing to do with green being a fashion trend. In fact, market researchers von Gartner have placed Green IT at the top of their Top Ten strategic trends and technologies this year. And in 2008, CeBIT which takes place from 4 to 9 March will be highlighting a whole range of technological developments for private and commercial use that can help save energy and other key resources. The special Green IT Village located in Hall 9 offers vital solutions and ideas addressing this central issue.
According to a recent study conducted by the research and consulting company Experton Group, all the major CPU suppliers have made substantial progress with respect to energy-friendly improvements over the last six months. This trend can be seen not only in start-up from standby, but also with processors working at full or partial capacity. DDR3 memory chips also employ new energy-saving technology that has only recently become available and accounts for big reductions in power consumption. So it will not be long before energy-efficient equipment becomes widespread. But consumers are not alone in demanding energy savings; this technology will also be used in data centres, helping industry and commerce reduce energy costs. According to market analysts, many companies are using their servers and storage components at below 40 percent capacity. However, this often reflects a lack of specialist knowledge, yet according to the IDC analysts 50 cents are spent on electricity and cooling for every US dollar paid by a CIO for a new server. If the situation does not improve by 2010, this could well have increased to 70 US cents.
In other words, it’s time to act. The dramatic increases in energy prices over recent months have played a big part in shaking up industry and prompting a review of the consumption of materials and energy resources. Politicians are also applying pressure on industry in response to climate change. Speaking recently at the European ICT Forum in Berlin, Klaus Töpfer, who has been both Germany’s Environment Minister and Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), predicted that companies which seriously address the issues of resource-friendly production and recycling will enjoy big market success. The Experton Group expects the market for Green IT to grow by around 66 percent per year until 2010. In another study, Symantec claims that Asian companies will be among the forerunners. When asked if they were already pursuing a green data centre strategy some 60 percent of the companies operating in Asia replied in the affirmative. In Europe, 55 percent and in the USA 34 percent said “yes”.
Of course, many privately owned electrical and electronic devices are responsible for unnecessarily high-energy consumption if they are not switched off. Whether television sets on 24-7 standby, satellite receivers or PC’s, it has been estimated that this accounts for ten percent of total electricity charges for the average German household. Calculated over a year, approx. 100 euros could be saved.
