Process optimization in engineering after-sales service

Beeware Cavea is a software-supported servicing and information system, which enables tradesmen, mechanics and servicing personnel to be taken through a job step by step. The various stages of the work are carefully planned and monitored by staff back at the company office. The servicing personnel in the field can receive the necessary job details on a mobile device such as a tablet PC, and can also refer back to the office for assistance if any unexpected problems arise.

This saves valuable time, and according to Bornemann it avoids the inconvenience and expense of follow-up service calls. This is said to offer huge savings potential for service provider and customer alike, while optimizing the quality and efficiency of service delivery. As well as displaying job information on tablet PCs, the manufacturer is currently developing the technology to allow this solution to run on navigation devices and other mobile end-user devices.

Monitoring animal transports across Europe

As from 1 January 2008 a new EU Directive has given added urgency to the protection and transparency of valuable animal transports. Afusoft Kommunikationstechnik offers a systems solution that can be adapted to individual requirements. It features an online-capable temperature monitoring facility, directly linked via satellite to the fully automatic, Internet-based alarm service Afusoft Security.Web. As the manufacturer explains, a remote monitoring unit RWX (5211-0000-01), a driver terminal (IFT) and a printer are connected to a satellite terminal in the truck.

Via a second RWX (5512-0000-01) in the trailer the data from up to four installed temperature sensors (590X-0000-01) and a door contact switch (5530-0000-01) are collected and transmitted to the cab unit. The data can be stored for a period of several days up to three weeks, and printed out as a report in the cab. The data plus temperature readings, as well as any alarms triggered, are also available for transmission online.

Speech output for text messages

Nomadic Solutions presents the new version 2.0 of its NS Vox system. This “vocal printer” transforms ASCII text messages, which are sent from the server by SMS, GPRS, WiFi or Bluetooth via an RS232 connection, into speech messages. In the new version the service is available in six languages: French, German, English, Dutch, Spanish and Italian. The built-in geo-localization system allows NS Vox to be integrated seamlessly into fleet management systems, enables off-board navigation information and even makes it suitable for use as an aid to the blind.

According to the manufacturer, the new version offers improved message management and enhanced hands-free/headphone-free functionality. It allows the driver to log in to the server at the touch of a button and download his messages. On the security side, the system incorporates an alarm function. It can store up to 80 messages onboard, and with a power supply rating of 9 to 30V is compatible with all types of vehicles.

Outlook to Navi

Today’s navigation devices are real multi-talented performers, with a range of functionality comparable to a mobile phone. In order to build on this achievement and offer an affordable add-on for small and medium-sized businesses, electronics specialist Bornemann is currently working on a solution to link Outlook with navigation devices. Outlook is a standard business tool, as the company reminds us. This means that all staff are already familiar with the program – and the possibilities this opens up for service providers are very exciting. Job and contact information can be sent direct from Outlook to the driver on the road. This saves communication costs and allows job and contact information to be downloaded at any time in digital form.

Location-finding saves lives

Every day some 60,000 distress calls are made to the emergency services in Germany via mobile phone. In many cases the callers are unable to give their exact location. The result is that help sometimes arrives too late. Now Bornemann unveils its iDobber, a mobile location-finding device based on GPS technology. When the emergency call button is pressed, an alarm call is transmitted in seconds, giving the current location of the caller. For children and those in need of help, and also for business use in high-risk occupations, as well as for vehicles and goods in transit, the device offers numerous functions for increased security. The precise coordinates for specified persons or objects are displayed on the iDobber Internet portal. In addition to precise location-finding, the system also has a geofencing function, giving users the option of setting up protected zones. As soon as the transmitter leaves or enters the selected area, an alarm signal is sent. All the tracking data are stored in memory and can be graphically reproduced at any time in map form.

Continuous workflow sequence without media disruption

The new Cosware Mobile Logistics solution allows the workflow sequence – from order-picking to loading and goods distribution to documentation – to be displayed on a mobile device as an integrated workflow. According to COS, the complete order and dispatch data can be exchanged continuously and in tamper-proof format via WLAN and GPRS. This process is monitored online by a messaging server, which detects any deviation and notifies either the driver or the dispatcher. As well as sensor monitoring of key parameters such as refrigeration data or tail lift status, the system also transmits geopositional data at periodic intervals for visual mapping purposes.

Fleet management system utilizes CAN bus data

The MUXy Fleet product family comprises a range of contactless CAN bus interfaces. These offer multiple options for fleet management applications. Data can be collected for a range of parameters such as distance travelled, items needing maintenance attention, fuel consumption and driver behaviour. The system captures the data on the CAN network. It scans each CAN channel for the configured signal reception (up to a maximum of 32 signals).

The data can be sent to a remote server in three different ways: periodically, on demand, or on alarm, triggered when a preset threshold value is attained. Several hundred data items can potentially be accessed from the CAN bus, according to the manufacturers. They can be transmitted via an RS232 connection or GSM. They can also be collected and stored on a USB memory stick.
