GENERA ’09 – May 2008 - Madrid

Energy and Environment International Trade Fair

The fair, which IFEMA initially announced would take place in February 2009, has changed its dates and will now be staged between 12th and 14th May in Halls 7 and 9 at FERIA DE MADRID • This measure will make 40,000 square metres of exhibition space available, thus catering for the growth needs presented on the part of the exhibiting companies • The new dates will enhance the unique identity and visibility of GENERA and, in this respect, guarantee an improved positioning on the European circuit of fairs for the industry

The twelfth edition of the Energy and Environment International Trade Fair, GENERA'09, which IFEMA initially announced would take place in February 2009, has changed its dates and will now be staged between 12th and 14th May of the same year. This readjustment regarding the calendar of IFEMA fairs means that GENERA will take place in Halls 7 and 9 at FERIA DE MADRID. In turn, this means the fair will have some 40,000 square metres of exhibition space available, an area that will effectively cater for the event's growth needs.

The purpose of this decision will be to increase the size of the exhibition space contracted by companies that have been requesting larger stands, as well as to incorporate all members of the different sectors that make up the renewable energies and energy efficiency industry. Furthermore, the new dates will boost the unique identity of GENERA, given that the event will take place separately with regard to other events. Furthermore, the fair will be more visible and create a stronger impact within the professional field.

The favourable progress that GENERA has made over its last few editions, as reflected in its growing exhibition area and visitor figures, as well as the excellent results achieved at the last edition, which took place on an annual basis for the first time in 2008, constitute the main reasons behind this initiative, which represents a significant step forward regarding the consolidation and positioning of GENERA on the European circuit of fairs for the industry.

With regard to the current marketing campaign, we might highlight the fact that seven countries have already confirmed their participation at GENERA '09 with group halls and, to date, more than 70% of the exhibiting companies at the last edition have renewed their attendance at the fair.

For the next edition, the organisers are also preparing a comprehensive Specialised Conference Programme, which will tackle a number of key issues of importance to the industry.

Organised by IFEMA, GENERA '09 will once again enjoy the institutional support of IDAE, the Institute for Energy Diversification and Energy Saving, which chairs the fair's Organising Committee. The other members on the Committee consist of representatives of the leading associations and bodies linked to the energy industry, including AAEE, the Association of Electrical Energy Self-Generators; AEE, the Wind-Power Business Association; AOP, the Spanish Association of Petrol Product Operators; APPA, the Association of Renewable Energy Producers; ASIF, the Photovoltaic Industry Association;; ASIT, the Solar Association for Thermal Industry;; ATECYR, the Spanish Technical Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Association; CENER, the National Centre for Renewable Energies; CIEMAT, the Centre for Energy, Environmental and Technological Research; Cogen España,  the National Energy Commission; the Forum for the Spanish Nuclear Industry;; the Department for  Rural Development at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Foodstuffs; the Department for Industry, Energy and Mines at the Madrid Regional Government; the Environment and City Services Department at Madrid City Council; the Spanish Climate Change Office at the Ministry of the Environment; REE, Red Eléctrica de España; and UNESA,  the Spanish Electricity Industry  Association.

The exhibition at GENERA '09 will be made up of the following sections: Solar Energy (thermal and photovoltaic); Cogeneration; Biomass; Aeolic; Hydraulic; Waste products; Hydrogen and Fuel Battery; Coal; Gas; Petrol and other energies.  This exhibition is especially recommended for consulting professionals, engineering companies, the energy trade, industrial energy users; manufacturers and distributors of equipment; installers and maintenance companies; promoters of energy projects, universities and research centres; decision-makers and property developers; Public administration bodies and, in general, all professionals connected to the field of environmental and energy efficiency.

Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe

Over 80 participants are taking part in the Expert Level Meeting of the Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe opened by the Polish Minister of the Environment, Prof. Jan Szyszko. It is the last meeting before the 5th Ministerial Conference to be held on 5 - 7 November, 2007 in Warsaw.

During the two-day debates, the experts are to agree on the final content of the documents for the Warsaw Ministerial Summit and the draft Ministerial Declaration and the two theme resolutions are to be endorsed.

First Warsaw Resolution "Forests, Wood and Energy" invokes the essence of timber as en energy resource emphasizing that energy and biomass are the issues to dominate the political discourse on forests. During the press conference accompanying the sessions, the Counsellor of the Mission of Norway to the EU, Knut Oistad, emphasized that maintaining balance in the delivery of timber and biomass by the forests with the simultaneous protection of their resources and biodiversity will be the main objective of European forest policy.

Second Warsaw Resolution "Forests and Water" will serve to emphasise the role of cooperation between the forest and water sector. As highlighted by the Polish Minister of Environment, it is necessary to gain a deeper insight in forest water interactions, especially in terms of quality and quantity of drinking water.

The Ministerial Declaration that will be an integral document of the November summit contains provisions underlining the role of forests in sustainable development, combating adverse effects of climate change and the significance of forests in the preservation of biodiversity, their role in the increasing demand for renewable energy and the impact of the forest management on the protection of water resources. "I believe that it is time for the 5th MCPFE to increase the contribution of forests in the quality of life of the contemporary European societies and future generations", said Mr. Szyszko.

The Report on State of Europe's Forests 2007 prepared by the Economic Commission for Europe and the MCPFE Liaison Unit will be presented during the 5th MCPFE. Christopher Prins of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN ECE) presented the structure of the report during the press conference and informed of the increase of forest areas in Europe and the employment of about 4.3 million Europeans in the forest sector.

The 5th Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe will be held between 5 and 7th November in Warsaw.

Background

On 5-6 June 2007 representatives of states and organizations member to the Ministerial Process of Protection of Forests in Europe (MCPFE) met in Warsaw to discuss expectations of European societies regarding forestry. Participants decided about the guidelines for the 5th Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests within the framework of MCPFE.

The meeting was opened by Agnieszka Bolesta, Undersecretary of State of the Environment Ministry, who said: “In recent years the concept of sustainable forest management has become an essential instrument for improving environmental quality of human livelihoods, a tool for nature conservation as well as the overall sustainable development. Today, everybody should be aware of that forests constitute a multi-dimensional element ensuring sustainable development of human civilization. I am convinced that the time has come for the MCPEE to enhance contribution of forests to quality of life of contemporary European societies and future generations".

During the meeting, experts from 31 countries and 13 international organizations discussed the scope of the declaration and two resolutions concerning forests, water wood and energy. During the press conference in PAP Press Center, Director of Forest Policy and Forest Information of Austria, Ingwald Gschwandtl, presented the ministerial declaration as a document, which reflects the vision of forests' future in Europe and covers the most important message of the conference. According to Arne Ivara Sletnesa, Senior Adviser of the Norwegian Ministry of Agriculture and Food, the first resolution underlines the issues of wood, energy, biomass, which determine the future political discussions about forests and limits which climatic changes trigger. The Head of Forest Planning and Management Area,, Ministry of Environment of Spain, Dr. José María Solano López, stressed the importance of the second resolution, which emphasizes the crucial role of the forest industry.

The documents will determine the main objective of the discussion on the 5th Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe. The title of the conference is „Forests for quality of life”. Prof. Kazimierz Rykowski, the head of MPOLE controlling team, said that the title of the meeting reflects the relation between man and nature and shows values, which forests bring into life of a modern man.

5th Ministerial Conference will take place in Warsaw on 5-7th November 2007. So far four conferences have taken place in Europe: Strasbourg 1990, Helsinki 1993, Lisbon 1998, Vienna 2003.
