International Trade Fair for Fruit and Vegetable Marketing in Asia

ASIA FRUIT LOGISTICA attracts additional exhibitors • Three-day fresh produce trade show runs alongside Asiafruit Congress

More companies and organisations are signing up to exhibit at Asia’s leading trade show for the fresh produce business which takes place in Hong Kong in September.

With less than 100 days to go before the doors open at ASIA FRUIT LOGISTICA, new exhibitors include fresh produce businesses in Asia-Pacific, Africa, Europe and the Americas. Latest additions include national pavilions from Japan, Italy and Argentina.

ASIA FRUIT LOGISTICA is growing again this year,” said Gérald Lamusse, managing director of organiser Global Produce Events GmbH. “This progress demonstrates the real potential of the fresh produce business in Asia as well as the opportunities for suppliers in the rest of the world.”

ASIA FRUIT LOGISTICA takes place on 8-10 September 2010 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Some 250 exhibitors and more than 3,500 visitors from all over the world are expected at this year’s event. ASIA FRUIT LOGISTICA is organised by Global Produce Events GmbH in cooperation with Asiafruit Magazine.

The trade show runs alongside Asiafruit Congress, Asia’s only fresh produce business conference which has taken place annually in the region for more than 10 years.

Some 600 decision makers from more than 25 countries in Asia and the rest of the world are set to attend the Asiafruit Congress again this year,” said Asiafruit Magazine editor John Hey. “We have put together a very interesting programme, which looks at the big issues about how to succeed in the fresh produce business in Asia.” • 15-6-10

MAF Roda Agrobotic: Sensors for fruit recognition from apples to lemons

The French company MAF Roda Agrobotic is presenting its complete range of calibration systems at FRUIT LOGISTICA. In just a few seconds, Globalscan V, Lemonscan V and Viotec can scan and sort apples, lemons, etc. into quality grades and colours. Cherryway, the system that is especially designed for cherry tomatoes, cherries and other small fruit varieties, uses the Optiscan-V method and classifies the small vitamin-rich fruits by colour and diameter. MAF Roda Agrobotic is also demonstrating its Speed Packer V6, which gently packs citrus fruits in multiple layers. The globally-active company, which invests 3% of its annual turnover in research and development, offers solutions for a wide variety of fruit and vegetables

Seedless aubergine from France

Gautier Seeds, France, is bringing to market the seedless aubergine Shakira. Other new developments presented at FRUIT LOGISTICA include tasty Minilou and Delicassi cherry tomatoes, early-ripening Arisona and Soraya melons, and the delicious mini lettuces Ticcos and Rivale. Gautier Seeds cultivates vegetable varieties to meet consumer demand and develops them until they are ready to be marketed as standard or premium products.

Celluloses de la Loire : Cost-effective shipping of apples

Celluloses de la Loire has developed a new generation of apple packaging. The French company is presenting its ComPackTrays at FRUIT LOGISTICA. These products are designed for environment-friendly and cost-effective apple transport and storage. The space-saving cellulose trays lower fruit transport costs. Each tray has space for an additional layer of apples. This means an additional palette can be placed in each standard high-cube container. The compact storage also protects fruit more effectively. The trays are made of 100% recyclable paper and are biodegradable.

Maersk: New refrigerated containers protect the environment

The refrigerated containers presented by Maersk at FRUIT LOGISTICA produce up to 30 kilos less CO2 per day. This is made possible by the specially developed software QUEST (Quality and Energy efficiency in Storage and Transport of agro-materials), which maintains a constant temperature in the container. Present this year for the ninth time at FRUIT LOGISTICA, the shipping company is providing information on the new generation of StarCare controlled atmosphere containers that maintain uniform quality of bananas for 50 days and thus enable longer transport routes.

San Jorge Packaging: Modified atmosphere bags keep fruit fesh

The Chilean company San Jorge Packaging is presenting its FF (fresh fruit) brand of polyethylene packaging foils at FRUIT LOGISTICA. The modified atmosphere technology keeps fruit fresh and crunchy on long shipping routes and maintains it sensory properties. FF packaging enables the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide through a polyethylene layer, thus slowing down the natural degradation processes inside the fruit. San Jorge Packaging is reportedly the leading supplier of modified atmosphere bags for Chilean exporters. The company has developed special high humidity bags designed for air transport.

World premiere: Fair-trade flower nutrients from Holland

The Dutch company Chrysal International is presenting liquid flower nutrients from fair-trade sources at FRUIT LOGISTICA 2010. “The product is made from fair-trade sugar from Malawi", says company spokesperson Arienne Post. Chrysal International's goal is sustainable production. With this in mind, the company has drawn up a corporate responsibility plan and located packaging plants near the flower cultivation areas in Columbia and Kenya to shorten transport routes and reduce the products' carbon footprint. • Feb 2010

Record participation at the fresh produce trade summit in Berlin

FRUIT LOGISTICA 2010 underscored its position as a leading global trade fair for the fresh produce sector with a comprehensive overview of the market, the presence of all key decision makers in the industry, and a record number of exhibitors and visitors.

From 3 to 5 February 53,000 visitors (+6%) from 130 countries gathered information at the most important trade event for the international fruit and vegetable world (2009: 50,000 from 125 countries). Quality criteria for the three-day fair included its international scope and the presence of top-ranking managers and industry representatives with high level decision-making authority.

tatements from exhibitors and visitors highlighted the excellent contacts with wholesalers and retailers, fruit and vegetable producers and import/export businesses. Setting a new record, 2,302 exhibitors from 71 countries (2009: 2,283/78), presented the complex logistics required to supply consumers around the globe with top-quality fresh produce year-round. 89 per cent of the exhibitors at this year's trade fair came from outside Germany.

According to Dr. Christian Göke, COO Messe Berlin GmbH: "FRUIT LOGISTICA is clearly a premium product for Messe Berlin. Hardly any other industry worldwide has a trade fair with such an indisputable market leadership position as FRUIT LOGISTICA. Fructofresh: Hand-cut fruit in high-tech packaging

Careful processing and optimum packaging are the hallmarks of the fresh cut fruit products from the Fructofresh company based in Poland. Some 120 employees cut all products by hand before the fruit is rushed to two new packaging lines to be split into portions in large packages and small cups. The company's own refrigerated vehicles ensure an uninterrupted cold chain to the point of sale. Fructofresh is on the right path with this concept. "In spite of the weak economy, we managed to grow by nearly 20% last year", reports Pawel Stobba, Fructofresh Sales Manager. The most important markets are France and Germany. Fructofresh supplies products to gourmet restaurants and increasingly to food retailers.

Fresh and ready-to-eat: Hessing vegetable soups

The Dutch vegetable specialist Hessing is well-known for its unique convenience food concepts. This year, Hessing is serving up four new products at FRESHCONEX, including fresh soups, complete ready-to-cook meals, eight new vegetable salads and a user-friendly vegetable pie set. "With these convenience products, we have set our sights on consumers who don't have much time to cook, but still want to eat healthy, fresh food", explains Hessing Sales Manager Martin van Lier. All products are guaranteed preservative and gluten-free. The Dutch company is well-prepared for the food industry's rapidly growing convenience segment. A trend that is becoming increasingly visible in the German food markets.

Agricoat: Surface processing of cut apples

There are more sensitive fruit than apples at the fruit counter. But when it comes to processing, this robust and tasty fruit is extremely fragile. Fresh apple slices turn an unappetising brown within 10 minutes. This is a real problem for the fresh cut and convenience sector, because the apple is increasingly being promoted by the retail trade as a packaged snack.
The solution is “NatureSeal”, a specially developed surface treatment sold by the English company Agricoat. The NatureSeal process not only protects sliced fruit and vegetables from discolouration, it also maintains the fresh appearance and extends shelf life. According to Agricoat Marketing Manager Karen Murphy, NatureSeal apples have a shelf life of at least two weeks. Sliced avocados and other sensitive fruit can be kept fresh for a week with NatureSeal.

Tacken: From agricultural retailer to gourmet food and fresh cut produce business

Tradition is a key attribute at the Tacken company based in North-Rhine Westphalia. Founded in 1946 as an agricultural retailer, Tacken has been a family-run company for 60 years. Back in the early 1980s, the company supplied the food service industry with gourmet and fresh convenience products including a variety of potato and pasta salads. Later, the product range was expanded with ready-to-serve salads packed in bags and bowls along with salad dressings for the food retail sector. Fresh cut fruit products were added to the Tacken standard range in 2003. Pineapple, melons and coconuts are cut and freshly packaged for the retail trade. "Freshness from start to finish is our top priority", explains Matthias Knoll, Purchasing and Sales Manager, describing the Tacken concept. "With this in mind, we very carefully select our raw materials and ensure they are free from all preservatives".

Walking Fruit tastes good sitting down

Many of the innovative ideas in the food sector come from Holland. This year, Fruity-Line, specialists for fruit salads and fruit juices, are surprising FRESHCONEX visitors with a very special snack. Walking Fruit is the name of the fresh snack to satisfy between-meal hunger pangs. The handy, cut pineapple stick in whimsical packaging whets the consumer's appetite for fruit. This has given birth to a marketing idea to introduce snack portions of freshly cut and peeled fruit and vegetables. Fruity-Line Walking products currently include coconut, pears, mini tomatoes, apples & grapes, green apples, red apples and mini carrots. These healthy snacks taste good on the go or sitting down.

From field to store: Kellermann convenience from a single source

Thoroughness is a Swiss virtue. This is especially true for the Kellermann Group based in Thurtal, Switzerland. The company gets its ingredients for fresh convenience products directly from the fields of its own joint-stock companies Purnatur and Thurtalergemüse. Along with a wide range of lettuces, mixed salads and salad vegetables for the retail trade, the company offers the food service industry a variety of vegetables and salads that are mostly available in two, three or more different cuts. Kellermann's key expertise lies in high-quality produce fresh from the field to the consumer's table. • Feb 2010
